Quick answer

Triangulation in IRON NEST belongs before the ballistic calculation. Use the mission’s partial reports, bearings, distances or reference points to narrow the target to a location on the tactical map. Plot the first constraint, plot the second, inspect the overlap or intersection, and add more information if the result is still ambiguous. Once the target point is defensible, measure range and bearing from the Nest and move to the Firing Solution guide. Do not mix a targeting error with a ballistic error: a perfect elevation setting still misses the wrong map location.

What triangulation is solving

The problem is uncertainty. A report may tell you where a target is relative to something else without placing an exact icon on the map. Each independent clue cuts down the possible area.

Plot the first reference

Use the correct origin. A distance from a landmark, a bearing from an observer and a line tied to another battlefield point are different constraints. Label the line or circle so you do not accidentally reuse the wrong origin later.

Plot the second reference

The second independent clue should narrow the first into an intersection or smaller search area. If it does not, review the report wording rather than simply choosing the place where you expected the target to be.

Confirm the target area

When the intersection is broad, use additional reconnaissance. The guide should prefer an honest uncertainty area to a false precise coordinate.

Measure from the Nest

After the target location is established, measure range and bearing from the Nest’s actual map position. That output becomes input for the firing-solution workflow.

Is triangulation the same as the firing solution?

No. Triangulation locates the target; the firing solution converts that target position into the settings used by the gun.

What if my reference lines do not meet cleanly?

Treat the overlap as an uncertainty area and gather another reference or reconnaissance clue instead of forcing a fake exact point.
